“Pascua is one of many anglers, maybe a majority, who believe in the accuracy of the solunar tables that are supposed to predict the best and worst times for fishing.

I've always shrugged them off as horoscopes for fish, far less important than local meteorological conditions.

Medicine Man had boated and released only one muskellunge in the first three hours, a 36-incher caught by Kevin McDevitt, a Clare resident and warrant officer who works for the National Guard.

But the solunar tables predicted a two-hour major period, with the very best fishing, would start at 11:58. And at 11:59 another rod started to chirp and Ed Denny, a Vietnam veteran from Constantine, landed a 32-incher.

During the next two hours four more muskies and two huge smallmouth bass grabbed big body baits and buck tails, with two of the muskellunge and one of the smallmouths being brought in for a measurement before being released.”
